My ad in the paper
The second round of the typography contest will be up tomorrow. Check back then!
I might add a new tutorial, but for this week I will be putting up a new set of brushes :)
I’ve been sleeping quite late, and this morning I had to get up at 9:30 to meet with my old boss because of some advertisement inquiries.
I’m not sure I mentioned this but the advertisement I made for my old job was put in the local School Life newspaper. According to Pat (my boss) this newspaper reaches about 29,000 people, so it’s pretty big!

I got this job on a whim….at first Pat had this random guy doing the advertisement, and the day before the paper was to be published she got the advertisement from him and it was pretty badly done. I’m talking like he was watching American Idol, feeding his 4 kids, coloring and eating a sandwich all while working on this ad which looks like it was done in under 10 minutes.
Pat was telling Melissa how bummed she was about how the ad looked and that it was going to be printed tomorrow, Mel showed me the printed ad, and as I was analyzing the bad line spacing and the horrible typeface selection – it clicked in Melissa’s tiny little mind that HELLO I GRAPHIC DESIGN!!! So Melissa told Pat that I should have done the ad for her. It was already almost 8 pm and I was going to Ann Arbor, but I knew I could take it on. I told Pat that I could do it and get her a new advertisement made before 12 pm the following morning. I stayed up til 3 am working on the ad, and got it finished. Everyone loved it!
Now it’s not exactly my personal style and taste, but for business/professional wise, yeah, it definitely works. It’s hard to stray away from your own personal likes when creating these types of work but you have to understand your audience and of course the concept of the piece (something I fail to recognize, but am understanding).
Then Pat introduced me to the newspaper owner and publisher this morning, as he was impressed with the ad too (and the fact that I did it in the same night it was to be published). He wanted to see more of my work and was talking to me about maybe collaborating with him on the editing of the newspaper. HOW EXCITING!!! This is really huge for me.
I’m starting off somewhere :) I wonder where this will take me.
Most recent resource information will go here. Swimchick is under construction as of Dec 25th and will be finished....soon? Just keep checking back ;)
