If you are looking to do some traveling or a vacation on a budget, here is a selection of cities across the country that can provide you and your family or friends with exactly what you are looking for.

Moosehead Lake in Greenville, Maine, offers plentiful opportunities to explore the outdoors. If you are seeking a northern rustic retreat on a budget, this is the perfect place to visit. Campsites for tents with electric and water hook ups are as low as $25 a night! Moosehead Lake is known for its fishing and in the winter holds ice fishing contests. The Lake is aptly named. There are moose that frequent the area, which is an added bonus if you are an animal lover.

New Orleans, Louisiana is a great adventure destination for a low price. Although New Orleans is best known for Mardi Gras, there is a lot more to this historic town. Every holiday is celebrated, including parades for Halloween, St. Patrick’s Day and Mardi Gras. Hotels start at $38 a night and the city has an abundance of low cost museum and historical districts that chronicle the rich history of New Orleans.

A great, cheap, beach destination is Virginia Beach, Virginia. With free access to both the beach and the state parks, there are plenty of activities to do for free. You can camp on the beach or in a more wooded location. Rates for tent camp sites start at $30 a night in the summer. If you want more substantial housing while staying in Virginia Beach, there are numerous hotels available at affordable prices, even as low as $50 a night.

In the northwest, you can’t beat the city of Portland, Oregon. Portland has a number of wineries that offer free, or low cost, tours that offer wine sampling at the end. With zoos, gardens and museums, there will never be a shortage of activities available in Portland. Lodging starts at $52 per night near the airport. Portland, Oregon, is a beautiful and unique travel destination that is budget friendly.

Yellostone National ParkA great and highly educational family trip would be a vacation at Park County, Wyoming. Park County is best known for its national park, Yellowstone. For an entrance fee of $25 per vehicle, or $12 per person if you aren’t taking a vehicle, you are entitled to admission to both Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks for one week. $50 will give you unlimited admission for one year. Primitive camping on state park lands is as low as $12 a night! A plus for those over age 65 is that you can get a life time pass to the park for $10 and camping is half price. This is truly a family friendly cheap vacation site.
