Cutting Pictures in Photoshop

In this tutorial I will show you how to cut out an image and remove an unwanted background.

I'll be using this picture of America, but feel free to use whichever you'd like.

Select the pen tool and make sure you have your paths selected. Make sure your toolbar settings are matched to mine.

For a more fitted and precise cut you should zoom in about 400% to the picture. Now as you begin to cut your picture out, make sure to utilize your curves and feel free to use smaller steps if needed.

Bigger steps (for those who are a little more comfortable with the pen tool)

Smaller steps (for those who are a just beginning or like to take their time)

It really doesn't matter what sort of steps you take, as long as it's fitted correctly you should have a great cut. So begin to cut your picture out!

Once you're done, connect the beginning and ending points and right click > make selection.

Now here you can vary your feathering, but I like to keep things clean cut at 0 pixels. You can try 1-2 pixels for feathering if you want your picture to look a little more soft on the edges.

After you're done, CTRL X your picture and paste it on a new document with a colored background to see if you've been successful. Also, if you missed a few parts of want to redo something, just go back with your pen tool and work it out :)
